HHV-6 is an immunosuppressive and neurotropic virus that can cause encephalitis and seizures during a primary infection or when it is reactivated from latency in immunosuppressed patients. HHV-6 may play a role in several chronic neurological conditions including mesial temporal lobe epilepsy, status epilepticus and chronic fatigue syndrome. Primary HHV-6 infection usually occurs in infants and is the most common cause of fever-induced seizures in children aged 6-24 months. Acute HHV-6 infection is rare in immunocompetent adults but may manifest as a mononucleosis like illness with fever, lymphadenopathy and hepatitis or encephalitis, with negative test results for CMV or EBV.
AmpliSens® HHV6-screen-titre-FRT is a quantitative PCR kit with calculation of HHV-6 per ml or number of human cells. This PCR kit is based on analysis of HHV-6 pol-gene fragment and β-globin gene fragment, used as endogenous Internal Control. Analytical sensitivity is 400 copies/ml or 5 HHV-6 copies/105 cells.
